Chapter 01

Living Wall Installation & Maintenance

Nature Hills designs, installs, and maintains living walls for commercial, public, and residential buildings across the UK. A living wall is a vertical planting system in which plants grow in a structured framework fixed to an interior or exterior surface, fed by an integrated irrigation line and a growing medium chosen to suit the species and the location. We handle the full scope of work, from the initial site survey and structural assessment through plant selection, system build, planting, and the ongoing care that keeps the wall healthy. Established in 2008, our team brings more than twenty years of horticultural experience to each project, and we treat a living wall as a long-term planting that has to perform for years, not a one-off feature that looks good only on the day it is finished.

Chapter 02

WE CAN INSTALL AND MAINTAIN ANY LIVING WALL SYSTEM ON THE MARKET

There is no single living wall system that suits every building, so we work with the full range available rather than tying clients to one product. We install modular tray systems, felt-pocket and hydroponic panels, cassette frameworks, and freestanding interior units, and we are equally comfortable taking over and maintaining a wall that another contractor installed. Where we differ most is access. We pioneered an anchor point–free abseil technique that removes the need for fixed anchor points, scaffolding, cherry pickers, or other bulky machinery on tall buildings. For high-level walls our trained operatives work from a flat rooftop, which cuts the cost, disruption, and lead time normally tied to scaffold hire and traffic management. That makes living walls realistic for commercial towers and tight urban sites where conventional access would be impractical or prohibitively expensive.

Chapter 03

OUR INSTALLATION PROCESS

Every installation starts with a site survey. We assess the wall structure, orientation, light levels, wind exposure, and water and power access, because those factors decide which system and which plants will actually thrive in that position. From there we prepare a planting scheme, confirm the irrigation design, and agree a programme with you. On site we fix the support framework, run the irrigation and any drainage, install the growing medium, and plant out, working to a layout that accounts for how species spread and mature over time. Before we leave we commission the irrigation, check coverage across the whole wall, and set the watering schedule. We then walk you through what has been installed and how the early establishment period will be managed, since the first few months are when a new wall needs the closest attention.

Chapter 04

WHO IT'S FOR

Living walls suit a wide range of clients. Property developers and architects use them to meet biodiversity and green infrastructure targets and to improve the appearance of a façade. Facilities and building managers install interior walls in receptions, atriums, and offices to improve the look and feel of a space and to help with air quality and acoustics. Retail, hospitality, and corporate clients use them as a distinctive, low-footprint way to add greenery where there is no ground available. Homeowners commission smaller interior and courtyard walls. Whatever the setting, the common requirement is the same: a wall that establishes well and stays healthy, which is why we pair every installation with a maintenance plan rather than handing over and walking away.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How often does a living wall need maintenance?
Most living walls need a maintenance visit every four to eight weeks, with the frequency set by the planting, the season, and whether the wall is interior or exterior. New walls need closer attention during the first few months while plants establish. A typical visit covers pruning and replanting any gaps, checking and adjusting the irrigation, feeding, and inspecting for pests or disease. We agree a tailored schedule for each wall rather than applying a fixed interval.
Can you install a living wall on a high-rise or commercial tower?
Yes. Our anchor point–free abseil technique lets our trained operatives install and maintain high-level walls from a flat rooftop, without scaffolding, cherry pickers, or fixed anchor points. This avoids the cost and disruption of traditional access and makes living walls feasible on tall buildings and constrained urban sites.
Do living walls work indoors as well as outdoors?
They do. Interior walls use shade-tolerant species suited to indoor light levels and are often paired with supplementary lighting and a closed irrigation loop. We select the system and planting to match the light, temperature, and humidity of the specific room, whether it is a reception, atrium, or office space.
What does a living wall cost to install?
Cost depends on the wall size, the system chosen, the plant species, the irrigation design, and access requirements. Because we work from a rooftop on tall buildings rather than hiring scaffolding, access costs are often lower than clients expect. We provide a fixed quote after a site survey so the price reflects your building rather than a generic rate.
What happens if some plants die after installation?
Some replanting is normal as a wall establishes and as it responds to its specific conditions. Our maintenance visits include replacing failed plants and adjusting the species mix where part of the wall consistently underperforms, so the wall fills in and stays even over time.
Can you maintain a living wall installed by another company?
Yes. We regularly take over walls built by other contractors. We start with an inspection of the structure, irrigation, and planting, identify any problems, and then put the wall onto a regular maintenance schedule using the same access methods we use on our own installations.
